If you really wish to take some steps towards seriously changing your life, you shouldn’t rely on willpower. This is the key to achieving the desired results.

It doesn’t matter whether you want to start a new business, be happier, get fitter or improve the relationships – willpower won’t help you. Changing your life is a personal achievement and it is on par with overcoming an addiction. Because when you want to change something, that is exactly what you are doing. We are all addicted to something. And these addictions prevent us from accomplishing our goals.

So, willpower won’t be of any help if you want to change your life. Quite the opposite – willpower is actually holding you down.

Willpower is for those that don’t know what they want in life

When you use willpower to accomplish a goal, an internal conflict occurs. You want to eat that chocolate but you also want to be healthier. So you are salivating just at the thought of eating the chocolate. So what should you do?

Should you be strong and resist the temptation? Or should you just eat that chocolate?

Willpower is much like a muscle. If it is too strained it won’t be of much use. By the end of a hard day when you’ve used up all your willpower it becomes exhausted. The fact that you need willpower, which makes you constantly exhausted, arises from two facts:

  1. You are not sure what you want, which in turn creates an internal conflict.
  2. You aren’t truly committed to creating conditions that can help you achieve your set goals.

So what is it that you truly want?

If you constantly need to strain your willpower, it means you haven’t decided what you really want. When you make a decision, your internal conflict will be over.

Are you committed?

How do we know we are committed? You will know that you are committed, you’ll create training regimes or work practices that in accordance with your set goals.

Create conditions that will make success an inevitable outcome

Success is a result of a long process. So if you want to be successful you need to transform your environment. That’s why having willpower won’t do you any good. When you rely on willpower, you are overcoming the tempting environment. And eventually you won’t be able to resist. The environment is stronger than our internal resolve. We are a product of our environment. You need to consciously create an environment that will make it easier for you to achieve your goals.

If you want to have asuccessful career, you’ll will create an environment with likeminded people with similar goals. We naturally adapt to the environment we are in.

Conclusion

So, whatever your goal is, don’t focus on your willpower or yourself. Focus instead on your environment. The environment and the people around you are the clearest indicator of the life you will live and the direction you are headed.
